With the holiday season already here, it’s time to take a look at the most-watched Facebook publishers of November 2018. The top ten of these publishers alone pulled in 15 billion views, roughly 2.5 billion more than October’s top ten publishers saw (and the second month in a row where overall views increased across these spots). Across the top 100 Facebook publishers, we saw one major trend emerge in November, and that was the sheer number of publishers which increased their overall rankings. Here are some of the key accomplishments of these top 100 from last month:
- Nine publishers claimed at least 1 billion views each (the most-watched publisher hit more than 3 billion alone).
- The highest average 30-day engagement rate (ER30) of the top ten publishers was a solid 1.2x, while the highest ER30 of the top 100 publishers landed at 2.5x, a clear indicator of fantastic engagement.
- The best 30-day average (V30) from the top ten was 4.6 million, and the highest V30 of all 100 publishers hit 22.8 million.
- Out of all 100 publishers, 7 of them increased rankings by at least 100 positions each, with the biggest position change clocking in at 719 spots.
Top Facebook Publishers November 2018
Some of the top Facebook videos of November pulled in enough views for new publishers to shake up the ten most-watched spots. Brave Bison’s Viral TRND remains at #1 for the third month in a row, and while LADbible and Unilad are still in the top five, 5-Minute Crafts jumped three spots to take 2nd place for the first time ever in the last year of our leaderboards! Additionally, the Daily Mail’s What Did I Just Watch? landed for the first time in the top ten at #4, with Jellysmack’s Beauty Studio placing sixth thanks to a fitting rank increase of six positions. Let’s dive into these publishers, as well as many others who contributed to November’s biggest trend of even more rank increases.
Daily Mail, Jellysmack Properties Take Center Stage in November
With the biggest rank increases across the top ten publishers from November, Daily Mail and Jellysmack have a lot to be proud of right now. With respective increases of +13 and +6, the two publishers are proving they know exactly what their Facebook audiences want to watch.
We noted in last month’s leaderboard article the popularity of positive entertainment on Facebook, and that Daily Mail’s What Did I Just Watch? falls easily into this category. Described as a Facebook Watch show containing “the funniest, most incredible, crazy and astonishing viral videos from across the internet,” What Did I Just Watch? more than doubled its views from 564 million in October to a whopping 1.3 billion+ in November (a difference of 736 million views!). The Daily Mail property also boasted the second-highest V30 across the top ten publishers of November at an impressive 4.2 million, just 400K views behind the V30 of 5-Minute Crafts.
In addition to Daily Mail’s show, we saw the entertainment publisher Jellysmack placing #6 in November thanks to almost 1.3 billion views on top Facebook videos from its Beauty Studio property. This was 562 million more views than this publisher received in October, which helped it bump up six positions over that month. Beauty Studio is only one of the many successful verticals Jellysmack has seen this year; other channels it runs are consistently landing on our leaderboards, a fact we recently discussed with the media publisher’s Head of Studios Eric Korsh. With such winning video strategies in place, we expect Jellysmack will continue its success well into 2019.
65 Publishers Across the Top 100 Increased Rankings
Earlier, we noted how the biggest trend to come out of November’s Facebook leaderboard was the rank increase of the majority of the most-watched publishers — we weren’t joking. Out of the top 100 publishers last month, a whopping 65 of them saw enough of an increase in views to bump up at least one position. In easy percentage terms, that means 65% of November’s publishers performed better in terms of views than they did in October!
This article would become very long indeed if we tried to address the reasoning behind many of these rank increases, but a quick glance across the leaderboard shows publishers hail from a few select categories: positive and uplifting stories, viral entertainment publishers, home and DIY content, and individual creators/influencers. One of the largest densities of “movers” in November was the #10-30 chunk of publishers; out of these 20, 15 of them increased their rankings last month. The most notable were America’s Funniest Home Videos (+37), Genial (+35), Ellen (+29), Mr. Bean (+27), and BigDawsTV (+24).
Additionally, these are some of the publishers who gained the most traction in November:
- Science, tech, and nature creator Hashem Al-Ghaili (+162 spots)
- Jellysmack’s Genius Club (+206 spots)
- Portuguese-based Solitary (+137 spots)
- Stereotype-challenging Born Different (+719 spots)
- BuzzFeed Food (+103 spots)
- Jungle Creations’ Craft Factory (+227)
- Comedy creator JR INN (+208 spots)
Clearly, many of these movers are paying attention to their audiences and responding accordingly with content tailored to their preferences, a move other publishers would be wise to follow the rest of 2018 and throughout 2019!
