How To Test The Success Of Your Video Before You Publish It

On this week’s Creator’s Tip, we want to talk to you about a couple of ways you can test the success of your video before you publish it online. During our Video Marketing Summit earlier this year, we gave you a tip about how to test how well your video might perform before you post it, or before you market it heavily. Sofia Stefou of Sofina Media suggested that you send your video out to some friends and family beforehand to test their reaction and get their feedback on your content. Now she follows up that tip with another – let’s take a look:

Gather Valuable Feedback Before Posting Your Video Online

If you are going to send out content with the express intention of garnering feedback then you may as well be methodical in your approach and create a survey. Why? Because if you need feedback regarding particular elements such as delivery, audio, subject, music etc then you’ll need to ask the right questions. Examples of these could be:

  • Is the Call To Action compelling enough?
  • Does the Call To Action make you want to do the thing/s I ask you to, i.e. buy a product, sign up to my newsletter etc.
  • Is the video content engaging enough?
  • What do you like about the video?
  • What do you dislike about the video?
  • Did you watch the whole video? If not, why not?

Getting this kind of feedback can be invaluable – if you act on it. Using a free site like Survey Monkey means you can gather the data at no extra cost and use to it amend or update your video so it performs the way you need it to, either on YouTube or on other channels such as your own site. Doing this kind of research can save you an enormous amount of time and effort

Understand What Emotional Triggers Affect Your Potential Audience

You can also use Unruly’s Video Lab Scorecard (available on request) that will give you some fantastic insights into what is likely to be shared online. Your video needs to trigger some kind of emotional response in the viewer which will motivate them to share your video with others. Bear this in mind when compiling your survey questions and remember to ask people if they felt they way you needed them to feel. If they didn’t then they could have a huge impact on the way your video performs.
