Microsoft Web Silverlight 2.0 is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering richer user experiences on the net. It produces rich interactive applications and media experiences for the net that include video, animation, interactivity, and stunning user interfaces. It also offers flawless, quick installation for users with the help of a small, on-demand, easy-to-install plug-in less than 2 megabytes in size and capable of working with all leading browsers. It can create richer, more compelling Web experiences that take greater advantage of increased performance. It offers stunning vector-based graphics, media, text, animation, and overlays that enable seamless integration of graphics and effects into any existing Web application. Silverlight has major benefits over other cross-browser formats like Flash and JPEG/HTML solutions including data driven capabilities, which enable better interaction with live data

There also are improvements in online video over Flash in scaling from HD to mobile, XML-based presentation for better search engine optimization for video and text content, and the ability to deliver content and allow access across multiple devices. It is based on the Microsoft .NET Framework, Silverlight allows developers and designers to easily use their present skills and tools to deliver quality media experiences and rich interactive applications for the net. Silverlight offers simple integration with existing internet technologies and works with any back-end Web technology. Silverlight integrates with existing infrastructure and applications quite easily, including JavaScript, PHP, Apache and XHTML on the client. The choice of development languages offered by Silverlight includes JavaScript, Ruby, Python, C#, Visual Basic .NET etc. Consistent presentation model by using XAML, the declarative presentation language used in Windows Vista–based applications. Controls, visual designs, media, and other elements can be presented with full design fidelity in Silverlight. Extensible control model enables it to add easily rich content and behaviors while enabling efficient code-reuse and sharing.

It can add vector-based graphics and overlays to media with support for integration of graphics that scale to any size and broadcast-style overlays. It also offers flexible ad-insertion solutions with video and animation that includes the ability to deliver fluid broadcast-style video or animated advertisements without loss of visual fidelity or motion quality. It offers a wide spectrum of media tools, servers, and solutions compatible with the Windows Media operating system. Silverlight has the ability to easily incorporate services and data from anywhere on the Web by taking advantage of the Silverlight support for LINQ and LINQ-to-XML while accessing that data with common protocols like JSON, RSS, POX, and REST.

Silverlight is designed to support all major browsers available on Mac OS X and Windows. Particular care has been taken to ensure a consistent experience on Fire fox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. Microsoft will extend the support for Silverlight on Linux through a partnership with Novell very soon. Silverlight has been designed with the ability to deliver high-fidelity experiences on the widest set of system configurations. Some of its features, such as HD video, may benefit newer personal computers. Silverlight readily supports WMA, WMV7–9 and VC-1, as well as MP3 audio. Additional formats may be available over time. Silverlight supports 720p, HD quality with considerable performance benefits over other available solutions. Its performance is dependant upon CPU capabilities of the computer and configurations.
