How To Add FLV Clips To Your Site

This guide provides a very easy step-by-step process to set up your website to stream an FLV video clip directly on a http connection.

To make a webpage containing your FLV clip:

  1. You will first need a player / controller in SWF format.
    1. It is the SWF file which will be embedded in your webpage as a normal Flash element.
    2. The SWF file will load any FLV video files and display them on the page, as well as control any function like start/stop.
    3. There are many ways to make the SWF player, and there are many SWF open source players ready to use.
    4. I would suggest to download this one by Jeroen Wijering (but you may do your research and find a more suitable one for you).
  2. Copy the files on your webserver.
  3. In the sample code below, Replace the file “video.flv” with your own flv file.
  4. Place the embed code below between the “<body>HERE</>” tags and upload all files to your server.
  5. Point your browser to the HTML file that you just saved and uploaded and you should see and hear the movie playing in the browser.
  6. Here is the sample embed code for the FLV clip:
    <embed src=””
  7. Be sure to replace “” with your actual site URL, or location to the video player.swf
  8. Customization
    1. The height should be the height of the movie+20 to allow for the control bar.
    2. The “flashvars=” parameter provides the actual relative or absolute URL to the FLV file.
    3. The “autoStart=” parameter can be set added if you want. By default, it is set to false to avoid the movie beginning to play immediately (good to save bandwidth), and rather wait for a click.
