Found a cool open source tool for quick reading of multimedia file properties, MediaInfo. MediaInfo is a cross-platform, light-weight, open source application that will enable you to view the detailed file properties for almost any audio or video multimedia file. Sure, you can find out what the bitrate is of a file that was encoded in by opening it up in a media player or a video editing program, but this tool lets you see the technical and tag information about a video or audio file without having to load the file.

There are version for various OS platforms including, MediaInfo for the Mac, Windows, and Linux machines. For Windows installations, you can run it as an exe file or directly from a portable USB flash drive. You can download MediaInfo from the sourceforge website.
What information does MediaInfo Provide?

  • General: title, author, director, album, track number, date, duration…
  • Audio: codec, sample rate, channels, language, bitrate…
  • Text: language of subtitle
  • Video: codec, aspect, fps, bitrate…
  • Chapters: number of chapters, list of chapters

What formats does MediaInfo support?

  • Video: MKV, OGM, AVI, DivX, WMV, QuickTime, Real, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD (VOB)…
    (Codecs: DivX, XviD, MSMPEG4, ASP, H.264, AVC…)
  • Audio: OGG, MP3, WAV, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, AU, AIFF…
  • Subtitles: SRT, SSA, ASS, SAMI…
