Flash Player 9 is constructed on the improvements of Flash Player 8 by bringing more power to the runtime by the use of ActionScript 3.0. ActionScript 3.0 brings along strong programming model, innovative performance and observance with the ECMA Script standard. This provides up to 10 times faster performance enabling you to rapidly build a new generation of rich media and rich internet applications.

ActionScript first appeared in Flash Player 4, over the years the language has developed, providing more APIs and object-oriented language constructs to enable it easier to build increasingly complex applications using ActionScript. ActionScript 3.0 performs in a new virtual machine known as AVM2. In addition to increased performance and more efficient memory utilization, ActionScript 3.0 offers a programming model that is well-known to the developers frequently using other platforms. There are hundreds of new APIs for features such as E4X, regular expressions, and binary sockets to give you even greater control over your content and applications.

Flash Player 9 includes new features, enhancements and bug fixes for Windows, Macintosh, & Linux versions :

  • Support for H.264 video
  • Support for HE-AAC audio codecs
  • Multi-core support for vector rendering
  • Full screen mode with hardware scaling
  • Flash Player cache for common platform components, such as the Flex framework
  • Support for Microsoft Active Accessibility in the Windows plug-in.

Flash Player 9 is stepping into the high-definition video empire in a big way by adding MPEG-4 video support. MPEG-4 uses powerful H.264 encoding and it has established its place as an industry standard for video that includes high-definition delivery. Flash Player 9 also supports HE-AAC audio, which is the higher quality as compared to MP3. In Flash Player 9 addition of H.264 gives developers greater choice. The current performance of H.264 does have limitations as lack of support for alpha channel and the incapability to embed video into a SWF file. The added support for H.264 simply means that there are now more options and wider spread compatibility available for high quality HD video.

For HD video content encoded with H.264, performance will vary depending on the capabilities and configuration of your computer. Flash Player 9 contains several extra features over and above its predecessors that includes support for H.264 video and HE-AAC audio codecs:

  • Enhancements to full-screen mode to use hardware scaling for improved video performance and quality on systems running Windows 2000 and Mac OS X 10.2 and later versions.
  • Rapid interpretation of vector graphics on machines having multi-core CPUs.
  • Higher quality and performance for downscaling large bitmap images.
  • Support for caching common platform components, such as the Flex framework, to reduce average application sizes.
  • Support for full-screen mode on Linux.
  • Recursive calling to and from JavaScript via the External Interface API is now permitted.
  • Runtime errors can now be shifted from JavaScript to ActionScript using the External Interface API.
  • Support for Microsoft Active Accessibility in the Windows plug-in.

Minimum hardware requirements for Flash Player 9 are:
