Finding something already popular and creating something all your own with it can be a great way to hit it big on YouTube.  In the past couple of years, we’ve seen some of the top YouTube videos like Karmin’s version of Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” and Walk Off the Earth’s version of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” become huge hits when the artists took the original song and did something unusual with it.  When someone can create a song almost perfectly using things that were never meant to be used as instruments, then you have something extraordinary, like user bd594 did with FUN’s “We Are Young.”

FUN – We Are Young – Old School Computer Remix

First off, let’s take a look at FUN’s original video for “We Are Young,” which has amassed nearly 160 million views for Warner Music Group’s Fueled By Ramen, a VEVO competitor:

Released on December 22, the following video hasn’t quite yet broken out to “huge” yet, with a respectable 15,000 views, but it could be only a matter of time.  Using an HP Scanjet 3C for vocals, a couple of hard drives for drums, and a Yamaha CX-5 for the piano, these old computer parts nail the song almost perfectly:

What I like about this video is that tried-and-true technique of finding something that most people wouldn’t think can make viable music and then finding a way to make it so.  Also, it’s the perfect song to create using “old computer parts” because the title of the song is “We Are Young,” which creates a bit of subtext.  These parts don’t “feel like” they’re outdated at all.

Unique content comes in many forms.  If you can find a different way to present popular material, it’s almost always golden.
