Behold the power of YouTube. You might have heard about the U.S. Marine, Scott More, who created a YouTube video to publicly invite Hollywood actress, Mila Kunis, to a military ball. I mentioned it in the weekend round up. It takes guts to do something like that, and I’m sure the man has enjoyed the attention that comes with a viral video hit. But something he’ll enjoy even more, is taking Kunis to the ball, because the actress has accepted his offer.

Now Kunis is a major movie star. After appearing on That 70’s Show for years, she’s had a string of films including last year’s Black Swan, and this year’s Friends With Benefits, co-starring new MySpace co-owner Justin Timberlake.
And usually, average Joe’s like you and me don’t get dates with movie stars. But because of the power of online video and social media, there are ways for nobodies like you and me to get the ear of celebrities. Like when Lady Gaga saw the video of Greyson Chance singing her song and then arranged to meet him on Ellen. Or when a couple college students used online video in a quest to get singing star Taylor Swift to come to campus to give them hugs… and it worked!
I’m sure YouTube is littered with videos of non-celebrities sending direct messages to actors and singers. But most of them never get an answer. But apparently Kunis is a good sport, and was flattered that this marine would invite her.
In a joint interview with Kunis and Timberlake conducted by a Fox affiliate crew, Timberlake excitedly tried to convince his co-star to accept the Marine’s offer:
“Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? You need to do it for your country.”
After checking with her publicist to confirm the invitation, Kunis made up her mind, saying, “I’ll do it.”
And now a little-known Marine is every guy’s hero. On November 18th, he’ll have one of the most popular young actresses in Hollywood on his arm, and a story to tell for generations.
So why am I writing about this? I’ll admit, it’s just a little bit fluffy for my tastes, and there’s not much actionable advice video marketers can learn from it. But it’s a Monday morning… some of us could use some fluff while we try to get our brains into gear. Besides, I can’t think of a better illustration for the power and reach of online video.
Can you imagine any other way this guy could have made this happen prior to the age of online video? He could have written her a letter, sure, but I’m guessing she gets millions of them. Same for email. But in the age of viral videos, you can get a celebrity’s attention with a YouTube video. Amazing. He took 30 seconds to record the invitation, and his life is changed forever.
And of course, cue the wave of imitators, as I’m sure we’ll see an influx of nobodies using YouTube to ask out famous women. It probably won’t work for them like it did for Moore, but it won’t stop them from trying.
This story is absolutely amazing, and a great feel-good way to kick off the week. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some video invitations to prepare.
