Today’s Reel Web episode is focused entirely on YouTube news and updates from the past week. While we certainly love the fact that YouTube is rapidly evolving, it sure would be nice if they’d take a week off so that we could digest all that’s new. In any case, here’s a run-down of several YouTube updates and news items from the past week including, a new YouTube app for shooting mobile video, new functionality to customize social notifications, and changes to some of YouTube’s contests and programs like On-the-Rise and Next-Up.
NEW Capture App for YouTube
YouTube just released a unique app for your iPhone called Capture. Unfortunately, this is not yet available for Android. What the app does is as soon as you open it, you can take video instantly from your phone and upload it straight to YouTube. The goal of the app is to make uploading video content to YouTube channels easy. There are a lot of benefits to utilizing Capture; it has stability built in, makes sharing automatically very simple and has filters, music, and other options you can add quickly.
NEW Custom Social Notifications
You will notice on the YouTube upload page it now gives you options to share automatically to Google+, Facebook, and Twitter as well as a box where you can send a custom message so that it doesn’t share it with the default title and link. This now let’s user create a custom message to send out to their networks and shows those messages in the feed on the YouTube channel.
If you tend to tag other people who are in the video on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ then You can craft a custom message to have like @replies in it so that when it goes to Twitter, it will automatically send those @replies to those people. It doesn’t appear to work quite the same way when tagging people on Google+ or on Facebook but overall it does seem to be a step in the right direction.
On the Rise Accepting Nominations
YouTube has had this program called “On the Rise” for a while now where they would pick a couple of different channels that they thought were really on the rise and promote them, push them, and give them a lot of publicity. Previously you just had to wait and hope to be picked but now, the program is opening up to accept nominations. You can nominate your own channel or someone else’s channel by filling out and submitting a form.
NEW Next-Up for How-to Gurus
Along the same lines as “On the Rise,” YouTube has another promotion coming. It’s called “YouTube Next Up How-to Guru.” The requirements are to have 5,000 subscribers or more on channels about how-to videos, training, or tutorials. Unlike some of the previous Next Up contests, it doesn’t include a trip to LA and tons of promotion, but it does include things like equipment, upgrades, and training via Google Hangouts.
Best/Worst of the Top YouTube Channels for 2012
Here on ReelSEO we recently did a post about the best and worst YouTube Channels of 2012. Our list didn’t just look at who had the most subscribers or views but instead it was looking at a combination of things. Hopefully this list will help you to compare to metrics you are using for analyzing the success of your channel and help you to make choices on how to move forward in 2013.

Hey guys! This week on The Reel Web we’re gonna look at some stuff happening on YouTube and I’m in kind of a weird mood, so let’s see how this goes.
Hey guys, my name is Tim Schmoyer and welcome to another week of The Reel Web where every week we just highlight, for you guys, news, online video world
stuff. We talk about it every week and this week there’s a bunch of stuff happening at YouTube, as usual. You should jut grow to assume that’s gonna be the
case. First of all, they have a new app. Wow, that was a high note. Did you catch that one? We talked about their old app or newish app in the past, but
this is a completely new app, totally different for your iPhone, ironically, not for Android yet. It’s called Capture and basically, what it lets you do
is, well, you can’t see that, there you go. It just lets you take video like instantly from your phone. It’s ready to go as soon as you open the app and
then upload it straight to YouTube. I think there’s been a lot of apps like Instagram of online video and I think this one probably gets the closest so
far. It basically aims to make uploading video content to YouTube channels super easy and there’s a lot of things I like about the app. It’s got stability
built in, which seems to work fairly decently. It makes sharing automatically very easy and it’s got little filters and music and stuff you can just
quickly add. But, there’s a couple drawbacks to it too and I think for our creator sent video on Thursday, I’m gonna do a more in depth review of this app
and show you guys how to use it and what it’s good at, what it’s not, what you should be careful of, just a couple things that I’ve already run into with
it. So, we’ll talk about that on Thursday. Make sure you subscribe to get that video, of course.
Earlier this week, I went to upload a video to our family’s vlog channel and I saw something a little bit different, something new on the upload page. Now,
it gave me options to share automatically to Google+, to Facebook and to Twitter. It also gave me a little box where I could put in a custom message, so it
doesn’t just share it with the default title and a link like it usually does. Now, it lets me custom craft a message that goes out to all those networks
and it also shows that message in my feed on my YouTube channel, kind of like if I was going to write it like a bulletin update like it used to be called,
or now it’s just like an update, right there on your feed. A lot of people find this very useful and I do too. It’s definitely a step in the right
direction. The one drawback I still feel is like when I post a video on Facebook sometimes like I’ll tag my wife or I’ll tag other people who are in the
video on Facebook or same with Twitter or with Google+. Now I can craft a custom message to have like @replies in it so that when it goes to Twitter it
will automatically send those @replies to those people, but the same thing doesn’t seem to work like with tagging people on Google+ or on Facebook the same
way. So, I’m still thinking that I’m probably gonna craft those messages individually for each social network, but at least it looks like they’re going in
the right direction.
A lot of you guys probably know that YouTube has had this program called On the Rise. It’s been going on for awhile now where they pick like a couple
different channels that they think are really on the rise and they promote them, they push them, they give them a lot of publicity and they help them out

basically, if you have 5,000 subscribers or more and you make how to videos, training, tutorial stuff they have a next up program specifically for you.
Now, it doesn’t include like a trip out to LA and tons of promotion, but it does include, if I remember, like $4,000 in equipment and stuff, upgrades for
you, plus some trainings via Google Hangouts and a couple other perks. So, if you want to learn more about that, the link is in the description below as

On our website at ReelSEO.com, we did a post about the best and the worst YouTube channels of 2012 and what I like about this list is that we didn’t just
say, ‘Hey, who’s got the most subscribers?’ or ‘Who has the most views?’ Actually, we kind of combined the two and we said, ‘Who is getting the most
subscribers per video that they’re doing?’ and what we found out is well, you can see the list right here. Some people are actually doing amazingly well
per video that they crank out and others seem to be doing fairly poorly. Now, with that said, we here at Reel SEO are not getting 239.4 subscribers per
every video we upload either, so you could say that we’re doing even worse. But, these might provide some metrics, maybe some things for you guys to
compare your own content to, but don’t let that stop you guys from being encouraged like, ‘Hey, what kind of metrics am I currently seeing?’ and ‘How can I
improve on those to go forward into the future in 2013?’ I would love to hear what you guys are thinking about your strategies of how you’re going to shape
