UltraViolet is now rapidly picking up steam. Nearly every time a movie hits disc, it’s in a triple pack with DVD, Blu-Ray and UV digital version. Now, it’s ready to invade the shores of the UK and start offering our friends on the island nation the same digital service.

The UK is set to be the second market, after the US, for the fledgling and problem-plagued digital locker service. WB will push Final Destination 5 out to the UK with UV copies the day after Christmas. If that goes well, you can probably expect the full lineup of titles already available in the US to hit there one would imagine (see full list below).

TESCO, a major UK retailer and partner in UltraViolet, has already announced digital copies of movies free when customers buy a DVD through Blinkbox, their own online video service. Their service will be complimentary to the UV service offering.

UltraViolet now includes over 25 titles in the US, even though many users are upset that you have to sign up for multiple accounts to access the digital versions (UVVU and the respective studio) which seems like burdensome and unnecessary tracking of consumer behavior.

The three studios with content available already are Warner Bros, Sony and NBC Universal. Still withholding content releases but in the consortium are 20th Century Fox, Paramount and Lionsgate.

The service is still going through numerous growing pains. You can’t download your movies yet, they can only be played through a specific application, like Flixter from WB and copies won’t do iTunes.

The major push for UltraViolet will probably come at CES next month in Las Vegas when numerous hardware partners are expected to announce availability of UV compatible TVs and devices which will make getting and viewing your UV content much easier, provided you buy new hardware.
