As I perused VEVO’s Top 10 Most Watched Music Videos, I wondered if anything new, or any artists other than Pitbull, One Direction, and usual suspects Justin Bieber and Jennifer Lopez, made any new music this year. But as we all know, music videos are driven by a certain age group, and they watch these videos more than once, more than ten times maybe, which was definitely the case with “Call Me Maybe” by Carla Rae Jepsen, which took this year’s crown mainly because Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was not a VEVO video. I see some repeats from last year on this list , and here’s the rundown.
The Top 10 Most-Viewed Music Videos of 2012
When it comes to music videos, we don’t even begin to crack the top 10 until we get into the hundreds of millions of views. Here’s the most-watched music videos in reverse order – Skip to #1 Here –>
#10 Pitbull – Rain Over Me ft. Marc Anthony (370 million views since June 2011)
This was last year’s #9, and it managed to stay in the top 10 this year:
#9 Jennifer Lopez – On the Floor ft. Pitbull (630 million views since March 2011)
Last year’s #1 still managed enough to stay in the top 10:
#8 LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem (507 million views since 2011)
Last year’s #2 most-viewed video stays at #8 for 2012:
#7 One Direction – One Thing (183 million views since January)
Finally, something from this year (barely)! Although we’re sure to see these guys on this list next year, too. Since VEVO isn’t telling us how many actual views these videos got this year, with this one we can see the kind of numbers it takes to make the top 10.
#6 Lil Wayne – Mirror ft. Bruno Mars (186 million views since January)
Lil Wayne teams up with smooth-voiced Bruno Mars for this strong entry that nearly cracked the top 5:
#5 Justin Bieber – Boyfriend (189 million views since May)
What music video list would be complete without Justin Bieber in this day and age? The self-made YouTube star continues to find success in online video and with the teeny-boppers of the world.
#4 Jennifer Lopez – Dance Again ft. Pitbull (193 million views since April)
Lopez and Pitbull hit the list together for the second time with a song that could really be considered the sequel to “On the Floor” when it comes down to it.
#3 Pitbull – International Love ft. Chris Brown (228 million views since December 2011)
Pitbull makes the list for the 4th time, with last year’s end-of-year hit with Chris Brown:
#2 One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful (297 million views since August 2011)
Another latter-2011 hit, this song gets One Direction on the list twice.
#1 Music Video for 2012 = Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
Outside of Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” Jepsen’s bubblegum hit was one of the most talked about and parodied videos of the year, with 357 million views since March and it far and away out-viewed the competition.
