Video game trailers are among some of the most popular branded viral videos around–just ask Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3, as both games have earned massive buzz and tens of millions of video views in just the past few months. But there’s a new king in the most-wanted-video-game department, as today one of the most popular video game franchises in history released a trailer for their next chapter. The Grand Theft Auto V trailer is finally here.

Grand Theft Auto, as a series, is hugely popular. I’d be surprised if you haven’t either played one of the games yourself, or seen them played. It has sold 124.1 million units, as of September 2011, according to Wikipedia. The franchise is credited with ushering in today’s era of “sandbox” gaming, where players are given large environments and the ability to freely roam and choose which missions they attempt.

Each new game in the series is kept tightly under wraps so details emerge on the developer’s timetable. A week ago… they teased this trailer, and today they released it.

Grand Theft Auto V is taking the series back to its fictional version of California–the setting of the San Andreas edition of the game. Much like Grand Theft Auto IV did for Liberty City, this new version looks to greatly expand the size and detail of San Andreas–the images are eye-popping and the most realistic we’ve seen from a Grand Theft game yet.

So, without further ado, here’s the brand spanking new trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, a game that will almost certainly break sales records when it’s released.

There is very little information given regarding story, characters, or voice actors. Heck, there’s not even a release date given.

No Doubt The Grand Theft Auto V Trailer Will Go Viral

When your product is beloved by millions, and you’ve built the brand up into a colossus like Grand Theft, there is a built-in audience for video of any kind. To be fair, all Rockstar had to do to get this video to go viral was put Grand Theft Auto V on a black screen for a few seconds. Fortunately for us, though, they decided to give us some impressive game footage, along with the huge reveal of the next game’s location.

This video was released today, so it’s doing that thing where the YouTube counter sticks at 301. But I would bet all the money in the world on this video’s chances of going viral–it’s already seeing publicity and stories from most major news outlets.
