The creators of Flipboard, Apple’s 2010 iPad App of the Year, are now looking to provide TV, movies, and even e-books in the near future. The app has been downloaded more than 3 million times since its summer debut last year.
Flipboard is currently best known as the app that converts Facebook, Twitter, and other online content into a presentation in which iPad users can “flip” pages like a magazine. It’s RSS and news aggregation with a cool look that has been emulated by the likes of Zite, Pulse, News360, and AOL Editions.
With more and more news aggregation apps forthcoming and attempting to improve on the model, perhaps Flipboard is trying to get an edge to distinguish itself further by getting into the streaming TV/movie business.
This is an odd game for Flipboard to get involved. Like any company trying to get into this business, no doubt they will be looking for “exclusive content” from the studios and networks. It’s getting to the point where there’s almost no more exclusive content out there with all the territory Facebook, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon cover.
If they can get a network like CBS, which is the only major network not affiliated with Hulu and currently ranks number one in total viewers overall, that would be quite the coup. With films, distinguishing themselves will be a little more difficult.
The Flipboard app is currently only available for the iPad, but will soon be available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
