World media domination belongs to the likes of Facebook, Google, Twitter, Apple, and why not, Rovio’s Angry Birds. The ferociously popular game app has turned into a marketing machine the likes of which Disney would be jealous. There was already announcement of an Angry Birds movie a few months ago, and that’s set for a release in a couple of years. Now comes the announcement that there will be a weekly web series this fall. That’s right. 52 episodes of Angry Birds are set to be on every screen available come autumn.
Angry Birds: The Web Series To Continue Awareness Of All Things Feathery And Furious
Rovio bought out Finnish animation company Kombo last June to facilitate production on of the Angry Birds universe outside of the games, thus it will be home to production of the web series. The new show will give us deeper insight into the characters, I suppose more than the suicidal cannonballs that we know them in the game, angry that their eggs have been stolen by eviler pigs than the ones in Animal Farm, again and again, with no end.
The game has been downloaded more than 12 million times, and the new chapter, Angry Birds Space, was downloaded over 10 million times over various platforms since its release a couple of months ago. It’s only natural when you have a fan base this large that you would expand the universe with toys, action figures, posters, etc. And why not try to sell a narrative based on their adventures, even if initially it looks flimsy?
Here’s what Rovio’s head of animation, Nick Dorra, told an audience at Cannes (courtesy Pocket Gamer):
Dorra went on to explain that the TV show would attempt to go beyond the basic mechanics of the game, and get under the feathers of the irate protagonists themselves.
“It’s about telling more engaging stories… and deeper thoughts, deeper feelings of the characters, such as why are they always angry?” Dorra continued.
We’ll probably see a lot of stuff like this, like the trailer for Angry Birds Space:
The episodes look to be 3 minutes or so in length, so we’re not talking about something that professes to be Shakespeare anyway. Rovio has been really good about using social media in their marketing, and they have a number of YouTube videos, usually advertising a new feature or update with some sort of animation. So we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of these angry birds in the future.
